Sciaenochromis fryeri (White Night morph) — White Night African Cichlid

Natural Habitat

  • Environment: Rocky coastal regions and open water in Lake Malawi

  • Water Conditions: Warm, alkaline, and mineral-rich

  • Temperature Range: 24–28°C (75–82°F)

 

Physical Description

  • Body Shape: Streamlined and muscular

  • Coloration:

    • White Night Morph: Striking pearlescent white to pale blue body with light reflective sheen

    • Males display more intense coloration and elongated fins

  • Sexual Dimorphism:

    • Males are more vibrant with longer fins

    • Females are smaller and have subtler coloration

Note: The White Night is a captive-bred morph of Sciaenochromis fryeri (commonly known as the Electric Blue Hap), known for its elegant coloration and bold personality.

 

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: Minimum 200 litres (55 gallons)

  • Water Parameters:

    • pH: 7.8–8.6

    • Hardness: Hard (10–20 dGH)

    • Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)

    • Water Flow: Moderate to strong

  • Substrate: Sand or fine gravel

  • Décor: Rock formations and caves for territory and hiding

  • Filtration: Strong, with good oxygenation

 

Diet

  • Type: Carnivorous

  • Preferred Foods:

    • High-quality cichlid pellets or sticks

    • Frozen or live foods such as krill, brine shrimp, mysis

    • Avoid feeding too much protein-rich or fatty food to prevent bloat

  • Feeding Frequency: 1–2 times daily

 

Behavior & Tank Mates

  • Temperament:

    • Semi-aggressive, especially males

    • Territorial during breeding

  • Compatible Tank Mates:

    • Other similarly sized Lake Malawi Haps and Peacocks

    • Avoid Mbuna and overly aggressive species

  • Behavior Notes:

    • Active swimmer that prefers mid to upper tank levels

    • Best kept singly or with one female in a large tank to reduce aggression

 

Breeding

  • Spawning Method: Maternal mouthbrooder

  • Breeding Conditions:

    • Provide flat stones or open sandy areas for spawning

    • Female carries eggs in her mouth for about 21–28 days

  • Fry Care:

    • Fry can be fed crushed flakes or baby brine shrimp once released

    • Can be raised in a separate nursery tank

  • IUCN Status: Not Evaluated (wild-type S. fryeri is Least Concern)
