Natural Habitat

Physical Description

  • Body Shape: Stout and laterally compressed, typical of Tropheus species
  • Coloration: Deep red to reddish-orange body, often with darker markings on the head and fins
  • Fins: Broad and fan-like, with subtle red or black edging depending on the population

 

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: Minimum 55 gallons for a group, larger tanks recommended for larger colonies
  • Water Parameters:
    • pH: 8.0–9.0
    • Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)
    • Water Flow: Moderate to strong, mimicking their natural habitat
  • Substrate: Fine sand or smooth gravel
  • Décor: Large rocks and caves to create territories and provide hiding spots
  • Filtration: Strong filtration with high oxygenation and regular water changes to maintain stability

 

Diet

  • Type: Herbivorous
  • Preferred Foods: Spirulina-based flakes or pellets, blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach), and occasional algae wafers
  • Feeding Frequency: Feed small portions 2–3 times daily to prevent overfeeding and bloat

 

Behavior & Tank Mates

  • Temperament: Territorial and aggressive, especially within their own species
  • Compatible Tank Mates:
    • Other Tropheus varieties (if space allows)
    • Julidochromis, Neolamprologus, or other Tanganyikan cichlids with different ecological niches
    • Avoid mixing with peaceful or slow-moving fish
  • Behavior Notes: Best kept in groups of 6 or more to diffuse aggression, with a clear dominance hierarchy forming in the group

 

Breeding

  • Spawning Method: Maternal mouthbrooders, where the female carries fertilized eggs in her mouth until the fry are free-swimming
  • Breeding Conditions:
    • Stable water conditions and a calm environment encourage spawning
    • Provide plenty of hiding spots and visual barriers to reduce stress
  • Fry Care: Once released, fry can be fed crushed spirulina flakes and baby brine shrimp
