The Tropheus Ikola Kaiser is a striking cichlid species from Lake Tanganyika, known for its unique appearance and vibrant yellow band across its black body. This coloration, combined with its distinctive body shape and lively temperament, makes it a popular choice among experienced cichlid enthusiasts.

Appearance:

Tropheus Ikola has a moderately deep body with a proportionally larger head that tapers towards the tail. Its black body is highlighted by a prominent yellow band, and in older specimens, the black can take on a bluish sheen under the right lighting conditions. The caudal fin is fan-shaped, contributing to its robust appearance.

Aquarium Care:

Tropheus Ikola requires a well-maintained aquarium with plenty of rockwork to create territories and hiding spots. They are active fish that do best in groups and should be kept in spacious tanks to accommodate their social and territorial nature. A tank of at least 120 cm in length is recommended. They thrive in clean, hard, alkaline water that replicates their natural environment in Lake Tanganyika.

Diet:

As herbivores, Tropheus Ikola primarily feed on algae and other plant matter in the wild. In the aquarium, they should be provided with a diet high in vegetable matter, such as spirulina flakes, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables like spinach and zucchini. It’s important to avoid protein-rich foods, as these can lead to digestive issues.

Behavior:

Tropheus Ikola is a social species that is best kept in groups. However, they can be territorial and aggressive, especially toward conspecifics, so it is important to provide plenty of space and hiding areas to reduce aggression. They are best kept with other Tanganyikan cichlids that have similar water requirements but different feeding habits.

Breeding:

Tropheus Ikola are mouthbrooders, meaning the female carries fertilized eggs in her mouth until they hatch. A typical brood can range from 10-30 fry. Breeding occurs more easily in established groups with well-defined territories.
