Spotted Metynnis (Metynnis maculatus)
The Spotted Metynnis is a peaceful, schooling Silver Dollar species recognised by its shimmering body and distinct black spotting across the flanks. Active and hardy, they make an excellent choice for medium to large community tanks. Their energetic schooling behaviour and attractive patterning make them a standout display fish.

Tank Setup:

- Provide floating plants or dim areas to reduce skittishness
Feeding:
Primarily herbivorous:
- Veggie-based flakes and pellets
- Spirulina wafers
- Blanched vegetables (spinach, zucchini, peas)
- Occasional treats: bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia
- Limit excessive protein to prevent digestive issues
Behaviour & Compatibility:
- Very peaceful schooling fish
- Ideal tank mates include:
- Severums
- Geophagus species
- Larger tetras
- Peaceful catfish (Corydoras, plecos)
- Rainbowfish
- Avoid fin nippers or aggressive cichlids
- Safe with most community fish but may eat very small tank mates
Breeding:
- Rare in home aquariums
- Requires soft, warm, clean water
- Egg scatterers among dense vegetation
- Parents do not care for eggs
- Fry require infusoria followed by baby brine shrimp
