Sparkling Gourami (Trichopsis pumila)

Species Overview

The Sparkling Gourami (Trichopsis pumila) is one of the smallest and most attractive gourami species available in the aquarium hobby. Native to the slow-moving waters of Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, these peaceful fish are admired for their iridescent blue-green scales that shimmer under aquarium lighting and their distinctive red and blue eyes.

Unlike most small fish, Sparkling Gouramis are capable of producing soft croaking or clicking sounds during courtship and territorial displays, making them a fascinating addition to any peaceful community aquarium.

They thrive in heavily planted aquariums with gentle water flow, floating plants, and plenty of hiding places. Their calm temperament makes them ideal for nano aquariums and planted aquascapes, where their natural colours and behaviour can truly shine.

Breeding

Sparkling Gouramis are bubble nest builders. Males construct a small bubble nest beneath floating plants or broad leaves and guard the eggs until they hatch. Fry should be fed infusoria followed by newly hatched baby brine shrimp as they grow.
