The Skunk Cory, scientifically known as Corydoras arcuatus, is a peaceful and durable armored catfish that serves as an excellent addition to community tanks. These bottom-dwelling schooling fish thrive when kept in groups of six or more. Despite their bottom-dwelling nature, don't be surprised if you see them occasionally coming up to the surface to gulp air. This unique behavior helps them supplement their oxygen intake by absorbing it through a specialized intestinal tract.

Sporting overlapping bony plates and sharp fin spines instead of scales, the Skunk Cory possesses a natural armor that offers protection against potential predators. However, owners should handle them with care, especially when netting them, to avoid getting caught in the spines. Often mistaken for Corydoras narcissus, the Skunk Cory can be distinguished by its shorter nose and transparent fins, with the tail occasionally featuring tiny dark spots.

The Skunk Cory typically displays a cream-white body color with a yellow-gold sheen, adorned with a distinct black stripe that starts at the mouth, extends through the eye, and curves along the back, earning it its common names: arched cory and skunk cory. This stripe continues towards the tail before sharply descending. Interestingly, the stripe can fade to almost invisible when the fish is calm or startled.

Originating from South America, the Skunk Cory is an omnivore, thriving on a diet consisting of various foods. They prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH range of 6.8 to 7.5 and a tropical temperature range of 22°C to 26°C. As egg layers, they exhibit breeding behaviors typical of Corydoras species.

Overall, the Skunk Cory is a charming and beneficial addition to aquarium communities, contributing to bottom cleaning while coexisting peacefully with tank mates.
