  • Water Parameters:

    • pH: 8.1–8.4

    • Salinity: 1.020–1.025 SG

    • Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)

    • Water Flow: Moderate to strong

  • Substrate: Sand or crushed coral

  • Décor: Live rock for grazing and hiding; open swimming room is essential

Diet

  • Type: Primarily herbivorous

  • Preferred Foods:

    • Marine algae (nori, spirulina), high-fiber vegetable-based pellets

    • Occasional protein (mysis shrimp, brine shrimp) for balance

  • Feeding Frequency: 2–3 times daily

Behavior & Tank Mates

  • Temperament:

    • Generally peaceful but may be territorial with similar-shaped tangs

    • Active and hardy; good beginner tang compared to others

  • Compatible Tank Mates:

    • Peaceful reef-safe fish (clownfish, wrasses, gobies, chromis)

    • Avoid housing with other Zebrasoma or similarly shaped tangs in small tanks

  • Behavior Notes:

    • Constant grazer; helps control algae in reef tanks

    • May change color slightly when stressed or at night

Breeding

  • Spawning Method: Broadcast spawner

  • Breeding Conditions:

    • Not bred in home aquariums; wild spawning observed in groups at dusk

  • Fry Care:

    • Planktonic larvae require specialized care not currently feasible for hobbyists
