Like other mbuna, it is active, territorial, and best kept with other Malawi cichlids in a structured environment. The “Pulu” form refers to a specific local or colour variant.

Diet

Keep in groups with a ratio of 1 male to several females to reduce aggression.
Tankmates include other mbuna of similar size and temperament.
Do not house with peaceful community fish or slow-moving species.
Breeding
Maternal mouthbrooder.
Females incubate eggs and fry in their mouths for around 3 weeks before release.
Provide flat rocks for spawning sites.
Fry accept powdered flakes and baby brine shrimp.
