Origin: Amazon River Basin, specifically in Colombia and Peru
Size: 5–6 cm (2–2.5 inches)
Lifespan: 5–7 years, sometimes longer with excellent care

 

Natural Habitat

  • Environment: Slow-moving rivers and flooded forest areas with sandy or muddy substrates
  • Water Conditions: Soft to moderately hard water, slightly acidic to neutral pH
  • Temperature Range: 22–26°C (72–79°F)

 

Physical Description

  • Body Shape: Typical armored catfish build, with a slightly elongated body and rounded snout
  • Coloration: Bronze or coppery body with a darker horizontal stripe running from the snout through the eye to the tail
  • Fins: Transparent or lightly tinted, often with a subtle bronze hue matching the body

 

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons for a small group
  • Water Parameters:
    • pH: 6.0–7.5
    • Temperature: 22–26°C (72–79°F)
    • Water Flow: Gentle, mimicking their natural slow-moving waters
  • Substrate: Fine sand or smooth gravel to protect their sensitive barbels
  • Décor: Provide hiding spots with driftwood, caves, and dense vegetation while leaving open swimming areas
  • Filtration: Gentle filtration with good oxygenation

 

Diet

  • Type: Omnivorous
  • Preferred Foods: Sinking pellets, algae wafers, and occasional live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia
  • Feeding Frequency: Feed small portions once or twice daily

 

Behavior & Tank Mates

  • Temperament: Peaceful and social, best kept in groups of 5 or more
  • Compatible Tank Mates:
    • Other Corydoras species
    • Small tetras, rasboras, and peaceful dwarf cichlids
    • Non-aggressive bottom dwellers and shrimp
  • Behavior Notes: Often seen sifting through the substrate with their barbels in search of food; they occasionally dart to the surface for a quick gulp of air

 

Breeding

  • Spawning Method: Egg depositors, typically laying eggs on flat surfaces or plant leaves
  • Breeding Conditions:
    • Simulate rainy season by lowering temperature slightly and increasing water changes
    • Provide soft water and dim lighting
  • Fry Care: Remove adults after spawning to prevent egg predation; feed fry with infusoria, followed by microworms and baby brine shrimp as they grow
