PERU BLEEDING HEART TETRA
Common Name: Peru Bleeding Heart Tetra
Scientific Name / Trade Identification: Bleeding-heart tetra sold under the Peru trade name
SPECIES OVERVIEW
A deep-bodied upper Amazon tetra with the characteristic red bleeding-heart marking. Mature males develop a longer dorsal fin. Dark substrate and plant cover help the group settle and show its colours.

Minimum Aquarium Size: 100 litres or larger
Temperament: Shoaling; males may display to one another
Adult Size: Approximately 5–6 cm
Care Level: Intermediate; a mature, stable aquarium is recommended.

These are aquarium maintenance guidelines. Stable conditions and gradual acclimation are more important than rapidly chasing a target.
AQUARIUM SETUP
Provide planted or shaded areas, driftwood and open swimming space. Use effective filtration and regular partial water changes. Avoid adding fish to a newly cycled or unstable aquarium.
DIET & FEEDING
Offer appropriately sized quality tropical flakes or micro pellets, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as daphnia and brine shrimp. Feed small portions and check that quieter fish receive food.
TANKMATES
Choose similarly sized, peaceful fish with compatible water requirements. Avoid large predators, aggressive fish and persistent fin-nippers. Monitor interactions when introducing a new group.
GROUP SIZE
Keep at least six, preferably eight to ten or more where aquarium space allows. Provide cover and watch for persistent chasing, especially between displaying males.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
