Natural Habitat

  • Environment: Slow-moving streams, ponds, and floodplains with soft, silty substrates and abundant plant life

  • Water Conditions: Cooler waters with neutral to slightly acidic pH

  • Temperature Range: 20–25°C (68–77°F)

 

Physical Description

  • Body Shape: Sturdy, slightly high-backed with a rounded snout

  • Coloration:

    • Silvery-gray to olive body

    • Irregular dark green, black, or blue-gray mottling along the flanks and back

    • Subtle metallic sheen under lighting

  • Fins: Mostly clear with occasional spotting on the dorsal

Note: Corydoras paleatus is one of the earliest Corydoras species kept in aquariums and is highly popular for its adaptability and charming behavior.

 

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: Minimum 60 litres (15 gallons) for a small group

  • Water Parameters:

    • pH: 6.0–7.5

    • Hardness: Soft to medium

    • Temperature: 20–25°C (68–77°F)

    • Water Flow: Gentle to moderate

  • Substrate: Fine sand or smooth gravel

  • Décor: Plants, driftwood, and shaded hiding spots

  • Filtration: Clean, well-aerated water is important

 

Diet

  • Type: Omnivorous bottom-feeder

    • Sinking pellets, frozen or live bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia

    • Algae wafers and blanched vegetables as occasional treats
