Pelvicachromis silviae (Silvia’s Kribensis)

Pelvicachromis silviae—commonly known as Silvia’s Kribensis—is a peaceful and colorful dwarf cichlid from the Pelvicachromis genus, native to West Africa. It’s a close relative of the popular Kribensis (P. pulcher), but distinguished by its more delicate coloration, golden flanks, and gentler temperament. Males and females both display striking hues, with females showing the characteristic bright purple belly during breeding. This species is a hardy, adaptable fish that thrives in well-maintained, planted aquariums.

Scientific Classification

Scientific Name: Pelvicachromis silviae
Common Name: Silvia’s Kribensis
Family: Cichlidae
Origin: Nigeria (Niger Delta region)
Adult Size: 7–8 cm (males), 5–6 cm (females)
Lifespan: 5–8 years

Appearance

P. silviae has a golden-tan base color with a subtle dark lateral stripe running from the eye to the tail. Males are slightly larger with elongated dorsal and caudal fins, often tipped with red or orange highlights, while females are shorter, rounder, and more vividly colored. Breeding females develop a vibrant purple or magenta belly, a strong yellow face, and black edging on the dorsal fin—making them one of the most beautiful of all Pelvicachromis species.

Behavior & Temperament

Silvia’s Kribensis is peaceful and shy, especially outside of breeding. They do well in calm community tanks with small tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, or livebearers. During breeding, they form strong monogamous pairs and become territorial, defending their chosen cave or hollow. Their gentle nature makes them excellent for smaller aquaria compared to more aggressive African cichlids.

Tank Requirements

Minimum Tank Size: 80 liters (20 gallons)
Temperature: 24–27°C (75–81°F)
pH Range: 6.0–7.5
Water Hardness: 3–12 dGH
Substrate: Fine sand (for natural digging behavior)
Lighting: Low to moderate

Décor:

  • Provide plenty of caves (coconut shells, flowerpots, driftwood hollows)

  • Use live plants, roots, and rocks to create territories and shelter

  • Gentle filtration and stable conditions are preferred

  • Slightly soft, tannin-rich water enhances color and comfort

Diet

P. silviae is omnivorous and accepts a wide range of foods.
Offer a balanced diet of:

  • Quality flakes and micro pellets

  • Frozen or live foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, mosquito larvae)

  • Vegetable-based foods such as spirulina flakes or blanched spinach

Varied feeding helps intensify coloration, especially in breeding pairs.

Breeding

Silvia’s Kribensis is an excellent cave spawner, easily bred in aquaria.
Setup: Provide several small caves or flowerpots for selection.
Courtship: The female displays her purple belly and dances to entice the male.
Spawning: Eggs are laid in a cave and guarded by the female, while the male patrols nearby.
Incubation: Eggs hatch in 2–3 days; fry become free-swimming after about a week.
Fry Care: Feed newly hatched brine shrimp or crushed flake food. Parental care is strong and continues until the fry are independent.
