Green Neon Rasbora (Microdevario kubotai)
The Green Neon Rasbora (Microdevario kubotai) is a brilliantly colored nano fish known for its glowing green iridescence and peaceful temperament. Originating from the slow-moving streams and floodplains of Southeast Asia, this species has become a favorite among aquascapers for its vibrant appearance and compatibility with other small community fish. Its shimmering green hue creates a beautiful contrast against lush, planted backgrounds.
Scientific Classification
Scientific Name: Microdevario kubotai
Common Name: Green Neon Rasbora
Family: Cyprinidae
Origin: Thailand and Myanmar
Adult Size: Up to 2.5 cm (1 inch)
Lifespan: 3–5 years
Appearance
This tiny rasbora features a slender, translucent body with an iridescent, neon-green horizontal stripe running from the gill plate to the tail. Depending on the lighting, this stripe may appear bluish-green or golden. Its small size and glowing coloration make it perfect for heavily planted nano tanks, where it can display its full brilliance in natural light.
Behavior & Temperament
Microdevario kubotai is an extremely peaceful schooling fish that thrives in groups of at least 8–10 individuals. When kept in a large shoal, they display natural schooling behavior and show stronger colors. They are best housed with other small, gentle fish and invertebrates such as shrimp, ember tetras, chili rasboras, and pygmy corydoras. Avoid larger or boisterous species that may intimidate or prey on them.
Tank Requirements
Minimum Tank Size: 40 liters (10 gallons)
Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F)
pH Range: 6.0–7.5
Water Hardness: 2–10 dGH
Substrate: Fine sand or dark gravel to highlight coloration
Lighting: Moderate to subdued; too much brightness can make them shy
Décor: Heavily planted aquarium with driftwood, floating plants, and subdued water flow to mimic their natural environment
Diet
Green Neon Rasboras are omnivorous micro-predators. In the wild, they feed on tiny insects, crustaceans, and plant material. In captivity, they readily accept:
High-quality micro pellets or crushed flake food
Live or frozen foods (baby brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops)
Occasional vegetable or spirulina-based supplements for balance
Feed small amounts twice a day to ensure they eat comfortably before food sinks.
Breeding
Breeding Microdevario kubotai can be achieved in a calm, planted setup.
Spawning Type: Egg scatterer
Setup: Use fine-leaved plants or spawning mops in a separate tank with soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0–6.5).
Process: Adults scatter eggs among plants, then should be removed to prevent predation.
Fry Care: Eggs hatch in 24–36 hours; feed fry with infusoria or liquid fry food, then transition to baby brine shrimp as they grow.
