Masked Julie (Julidochromis transcriptus)

Also known as: Black-and-White Julie, Transcriptus Julie

Overview

The Masked Julie is one of the smallest and most attractive Julidochromis species from Lake Tanganyika. Its bold black-and-white patterning, combined with a distinctive “mask” across the face, makes it stand out in rocky tanks. Despite its small size, it is territorial—especially when breeding—but generally calmer than larger Julies.

An excellent choice for smaller Tanganyikan setups.

Scientific Name

Julidochromis transcriptus

5–6 cm (2–2.5 inches)
One of the smallest Julidochromis species.

Lifespan

8–10 years

Temperament

Semi-aggressive, territorial around caves
Best kept as:

  • Single pair in tanks under 100 L

  • Groups only in larger, heavily structured tanks

Tank Size

Minimum 60 L (15 gallons) for a pair
100 L+ for mixed Tanganyikan communities

Water Parameters

Lake Tanganyika conditions:

  • Temperature: 24–27°C

  • pH: 7.8–9.0

  • Hardness: Hard to very hard (10–20+ dGH)

  • Alkalinity: High KH essential

Diet

Omnivorous micro-predator
Accepts:

  • Premium cichlid pellets/granules

  • Frozen brine shrimp, mysis, daphnia

  • Live foods (grindal worms, daphnia)

  • Spirulina-based foods for digestive balance

  • Substrate: Fine sand

  • Plants: Optional (Anubias, Vallisneria, Java fern)

  • Flow: Moderate, stable

  • Lighting: Moderate

  • Water quality: Very stable, oxygenated, high pH/KH

Ensuring plenty of hiding spots reduces territorial stress.

Behaviour

  • Forms monogamous pairs

  • Territorial around a chosen cave area

  • More peaceful than ornatus or marlieri

  • Suitable tankmates:

    • Shell dwellers (in larger tanks)

    • Cyprichromis species

    • Small Altolamprologus (careful)

    • Gobies (Eretmodus, Tanganicodus)
