INFERNAL TETRA
Common Name: Infernal Tetra
Scientific Name / Trade Identification: Hyphessobrycon sp. "Infernalis"
SPECIES OVERVIEW
A striking Brazilian trade tetra whose dominant males can develop deep red colouration. Females and subordinate fish may look much paler. Allow enough room and cover for males to display without continually pursuing other fish.
CARE REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Aquarium Size: 150 litres or larger, with a generous swimming length
Temperament: Active; males may be territorial
Adult Size: Approximately 5–6 cm
Care Level: Intermediate; a mature, stable aquarium is recommended.
WATER PARAMETERS
Temperature: 23–26°C
pH: 6.0–7.0
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water; match the water conditions of the arriving stock.
Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
These are aquarium maintenance guidelines. Stable conditions and gradual acclimation are more important than rapidly chasing a target.
AQUARIUM SETUP
Provide planted or shaded areas, driftwood and open swimming space. Use effective filtration and regular partial water changes. Avoid adding fish to a newly cycled or unstable aquarium.
DIET & FEEDING
Offer appropriately sized quality tropical flakes or micro pellets, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as daphnia and brine shrimp. Feed small portions and check that quieter fish receive food.
TANKMATES
Choose similarly sized, peaceful fish with compatible water requirements. Avoid large predators, aggressive fish and persistent fin-nippers. Monitor interactions when introducing a new group.
GROUP SIZE
Keep at least six, preferably eight to ten or more where aquarium space allows. Provide cover and watch for persistent chasing, especially between displaying males.
