FIRE ANT TETRA
Common Name: Fire Ant Tetra
Scientific Name / Trade Identification: Hyphessobrycon myrmex
SPECIES OVERVIEW
A small Brazilian tetra known for the vivid red-orange colour that males can develop. Females are generally less intensely coloured. Plants and visual barriers give displaying fish space to retreat.
CARE REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Aquarium Size: 80 litres or larger
Temperament: Shoaling; males display and may spar
Adult Size: Approximately 3–4 cm
Care Level: Intermediate; a mature, stable aquarium is recommended.
WATER PARAMETERS
Temperature: 24–26°C
pH: 6.0–7.0
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water; match the water conditions of the arriving stock.
Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
These are aquarium maintenance guidelines. Stable conditions and gradual acclimation are more important than rapidly chasing a target.
AQUARIUM SETUP
Provide planted or shaded areas, driftwood and open swimming space. Use effective filtration and regular partial water changes. Avoid adding fish to a newly cycled or unstable aquarium.
DIET & FEEDING
Offer appropriately sized quality tropical flakes or micro pellets, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as daphnia and brine shrimp. Feed small portions and check that quieter fish receive food.
TANKMATES
Choose similarly sized, peaceful fish with compatible water requirements. Avoid large predators, aggressive fish and persistent fin-nippers. Monitor interactions when introducing a new group.
GROUP SIZE
Keep at least six, preferably eight to ten or more where aquarium space allows. Provide cover and watch for persistent chasing, especially between displaying males.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Fire Ant Tetra is a separate species from Ember Tetra. Colour intensity differs between males, females and juveniles.
Sold un-sexed unless specifically stated. Natural colour, markings and fin development vary with age, sex, lighting and condition.
