Physical Description

  • Body Shape: Deep-bodied and laterally compressed
  • Coloration: Vibrant iridescent blue with darker markings and a metallic sheen
  • Fins: Broad and flowing, often with electric blue highlights extending across the dorsal and caudal fins

 

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: Minimum 55 gallons for a single fish, 75+ gallons for a pair
  • Water Parameters:
    • pH: 6.5–7.5
    • Temperature: 24–30°C (75–86°F)
    • Water Flow: Moderate with good filtration
  • Substrate: Fine sand or smooth gravel
  • Décor: Driftwood, caves, and rock formations for shelter, along with sturdy plants like Anubias and Java Fern
  • Filtration: Strong filtration with regular water changes to maintain stable water quality

 

Diet

  • Type: Carnivorous/omnivorous
  • Preferred Foods: High-quality cichlid pellets, frozen or live foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp, earthworms), and occasional vegetables
  • Feeding Frequency: Feed once or twice daily in small portions

Behavior & Tank Mates

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive but generally less territorial than standard Jack Dempseys
  • Compatible Tank Mates:
    • Medium to large South or Central American cichlids (like Severums, Firemouths, or Convicts)
    • Large catfish (Plecos, Synodontis)
    • Avoid small fish, as they may be seen as food
  • Behavior Notes: Intelligent and interactive, often recognizing their owners; can be territorial during breeding

 

Breeding

  • Spawning Method: Egg layers, typically laying eggs on flat surfaces like rocks or driftwood
  • Breeding Conditions:
    • Slightly warmer water (26–30°C) and high water quality encourage spawning
    • Pairs form strong bonds and exhibit parental care, guarding eggs and fry
  • Fry Care: Once hatched, fry can be fed baby brine shrimp and finely crushed flakes
