The Convict Cichlid is a highly popular fish in the aquarium hobby due to its vibrant coloration, ease of care, and straightforward breeding process, making it an excellent choice for beginner aquarists. With a relatively small size, growing up to around 15cm for males and 10cm for females, Convict Cichlids are native to Central America, specifically found in streams and rivers.

Thriving in various water conditions, Convict Cichlids prefer some water movement, rocks, plants, and roughage for hiding. While not essential, strong plants can be a valuable addition. The name "Convict" is derived from their black and white stripes, although there is also a pink/white variation.

Convict Cichlids are generally hardy but can become aggressive, especially during breeding. It's advisable to keep them in a separate tank to avoid conflicts. Alternatively, if in a community tank, ensure it's significantly larger than the minimum size (at least 200 liters) and not overcrowded.

These cichlids are versatile eaters, accepting various foods. A high-quality fish flake or pellet designed for Cichlids is recommended. Supplementing their diet with live and frozen foods like bloodworms, Tubifex worms, brine shrimp, and Daphnia enhances their nutrition.

Sexing Convict Cichlids is straightforward, with males being larger and females developing yellow-red coloration on their underbelly at sexual maturity. Breeding is easy, and any male can breed with any female without elaborate courtship rituals.

The breeding process involves placing flat stones or structures in the tank, replicating rocky overhangs. Convict Cichlids will lay eggs, and the female guards them while the male defends the territory. Once hatched, the parents actively care for the fry, making Convict Cichlids excellent parents.
