The Bumblebee Goby (Brachygobius xanthozona) is a small, bottom-dwelling fish known for its striking black and yellow stripes, resembling a bumblebee. Native to the brackish waters of Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand, this species is popular in aquariums for its distinctive appearance and active behavior.

Appearance:

Bumblebee Gobies have alternating black and yellow stripes, with males typically displaying brighter colors and a more slender build than females, which can be distinguished with close observation.

Aquarium Care:

To best replicate their natural habitat, a tank for Bumblebee Gobies should include plenty of hiding spots using rocks, caves, and driftwood. They are social and do well in groups of 6-7. Males can be mildly territorial, often claiming a specific spot in the tank.

Feeding & Nutrition:

These gobies are fussy eaters, preferring live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms. They often ignore stationary food like flakes or pellets, so feeding them may require extra attention. To keep them healthy, offer moving foods to mimic their natural diet.

Tank Mates:

Bumblebee Gobies are peaceful and thrive in community tanks with non-aggressive fish. However, avoid bottom-dwelling species or larger fish that might prey on them. Suitable tank mates include peaceful species like tetras, guppies, and other small fish.

Breeding:

Bumblebee Gobies are egg layers, typically breeding in caves or other sheltered spots. Breeding in captivity is possible but requires attention to water conditions and ensuring the presence of safe spawning areas.

FAQs:

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 40 liters is recommended for a small group, with ample hiding spots.

  • Freshwater or Brackish Water?: While they can live in freshwater, they thrive best in slightly brackish water, which more closely mimics their natural habitat.

  • Feeding Frequency: Feed them once or twice daily with live or frozen foods that stimulate their feeding response.

  • Compatibility in Community Tanks: Bumblebee Gobies are peaceful but should not be housed with large or aggressive species that may eat them.

  • Lifespan: With proper care, they can live 2-3 years in an aquarium.
