It originates from inland waters in South America, specifically the Amazon River basin in Ecuador and Northern Peru, and was first described by Edward Drinker Cope in 1872.
This fish typically reaches a length of up to 1.7 inches (4.4 centimeters). It thrives in tropical climates with water conditions featuring a pH range of 6.0–8.0, water hardness of 2–25 dGH, and a temperature range of 77–83 °F (25–28 °C). Its diet includes worms, benthic crustaceans, insects, and plant matter.
