The Azureus Cichlid is a reasonably peaceful African Cichlid and can be kept with other Malawi Cichlids of similar size and temperament. Mature males are vivid blue, females are a more grey colour with 3 black spots. Mature males are larger than females. Juvenile fish are all coloured as the mature female and males will develop the blue colours as they grow from about 8 months old.
This striking and stunning fish is found in Lake Malawi around Mbenji Island and some have reportedly been seen around Nakantenga Island. This fish prefers the open water, and in the wild is often found at depths of 15 – 23 meters. This means that it is best kept in a large aquarium preferably greater than 200 Litres.
