Golden Dwarf Cichlid (Nannacara anomala)

The Golden Dwarf Cichlid, Nannacara anomala, is a small and attractive cichlid from the coastal rivers of Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. Males are larger and display brilliant metallic turquoise and golden coloration with long fins, while females remain smaller and become a bright golden-yellow when breeding. Their strong sexual dimorphism makes it easy to distinguish between sexes.

This species is considered peaceful for a cichlid, though males will defend territories during breeding. They prefer aquariums with soft sand, caves, driftwood, and plants that create shaded hiding places and natural spawning sites. In the wild they are found in soft, slightly acidic waters among leaf litter and submerged roots, conditions which can be recreated in the aquarium. Females are dedicated parents, guarding eggs and fry carefully.

They adapt well to aquarium life, accepting a wide range of foods, and are an excellent choice for aquarists wanting to try keeping dwarf cichlids for the first time.
